A Black Stormtrooper?

Posted: December 4, 2014 in Uncategorized

“And why not? It worked in Blazing Saddles.” OK, not the most accurate of punch lines but it helps get the point across. And who doesn’t love a god Mel Brooks reference? Hey, what do you want from me? It’s been a while since I made a post and I’m a little rusty. However, recent interest in this little blog o’ mine (that apparently at least one person reads) has tempted me to come out of my self induced laziness and start posting again. So to get things rolling I’m just going to repost something from my Facebook page. It was pretty popular and got shared a couple of times so it’s already making the internet rounds. If you haven’t been able catch it there then enjoy it here.

So I just recently became aware that there has apparently been some racial nerd rage on the internet regarding the “black stormtrooper” in the Episode VII teaser. I haven’t seen any of the actual comments but it apparently boils down to “stormtroopers can’t be black.” I’m guessing because of the whole Jango Fett clonetrooper stuff from Episodes II & III. As one, personally, who isn’t shy of some nerd rage of my own I’m hear to say that the internet needs to calm the hell down! I’m bouts to drop some nerd knowledge on you! First of all, we don’t really know anything about the new movie yet. All you see in the trailer is a black guy in a stormtrooper suit. Is he a stormtrooper? Maybe? Is he a rebel in disguise? Perhaps. He does look a little distressed.

There was, after all, a little independent film about 30 some odd years ago that people may have heard of. I believe it was called Star Wars: Episode IV. In that, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker dress up as stormtroopers.

But were they stormtroopers? Nope! And even if the black stormtrooper (John Boyega) is a stormtrooper, it’s ok. Because as any true Star Wars fan knows…the Empire stopped using the clones shortly after the events of Episode III. I mean, think about it…the clones were engineered to age 30+ years in a 10 year period. So in Episode IV (20 years after III) it’s safe to assume most of the clones have died. Stormtroopers are now recruits. A point that was actually made in a recent episode of Star Wars: Rebels, which is now canon to the storyline under Disney’s leadership. And one of those recruits in the episode was…dun dun duuuuun….black! The moral of the story kids is don’t be mad that the stormtrooper is black. Be mad that he called yo momma a scruffy looking nerf herder and stole your power converters.
